Hardishake

What’s Happening to My Fiber Cement Roof (Hardishake)?

Hardishake fiber cement shingles were made by rolling a wire mesh wheel through a mixture of sand, cellulose wood fibers and portland cement.  When the collected layers reached 1/4' thickness, they were stamped into shingles with either a "shake" or "slate" imprint. The shingles were then laminated creating a moisture barrier. If you are the original owner of a Hardishake roof, you'll remember that your roof had a glossy sheen when first installed. Although the Hardishake material was sold with a lifetime 50-year warranty - many homeowners have discovered what they have called a "fatal flaw" in the product. Your roof may already be showing signs of failure - breaking, cracking, delaminating and most common of all black staining. The biggest cause of these flaws is that the original laminate has not lasted. The wood cellulose fibers that are now exposed to moisture are absorbing water and just like any other wood that absorbs water its contracting and expanding with fluctuations in the temperatures. This in turn is causing the tiles to get brittle and crack. When the algae (the black stains) freeze during colder temperatures it does the same to the integrity of the tiles.

Our Process

Cleaning a Hardishake roof is a delicate process. First we are going to saturate your roof using our specially formulated detergents. While saturated the detergents will go to work killing the algae that are causing those ugly black stains. Once the algae have been completely removed from the roof the detergents will then be allowed to dry ensuring that a thin protective layer is left behind. While left behind this layer along with our added fungicide, will act as somewhat of a moisture barrier ensuring that the algae will not return for some time and also extend the life of your roof. As everyone knows as along as you maintain your roof using our services we will guarantee that your algae stains will never return.
